A willow looked on gingerly as Canopy passed, aware that something was happening. Canopy’s leaves were now disappearing. Not slowly, or cautiously as happens during the Great fall, but rather in great chunks, ripped from their branches by some unseen force. Canopy reached a cliff at the edge of the forest overlooking a beautiful ocean that crashed and withdrew with a gentle ferocity. At this end Canopy looked over the cliff into the swirling depths in search of a bed below. The sunsets sent dazzling colours across the sky, painted by a giant hand that did not enter the forest.		As these thoughts grew overwhelming they withdrew from the forest, their roots slowly bringing them to a place without trees. A willow looked on gingerly as Canopy passed, aware that something was happening. Canopy’s leaves were now disappearing. Not slowly, or cautiously as happens during the Great fall, but rather in great chunks, ripped from their branches by some unseen force. Canopy reached a cliff at the edge of the forest overlooking a beautiful ocean that crashed and withdrew with a gentle ferocity. At this end Canopy looked over the cliff into the swirling depths in search of a bed below. The sunsets sent dazzling colours across the sky, painted by a giant hand that did not enter the forest.


Some time later, a root reached out for Canopy. It felt like the other Oaks but something about this one was different. There was a tenderness and a comfort that Canopy had never felt before. As more roots reached out, Canopy recognized an Oak like themselves. Roots became entangled and branches brushed against each other. Canopy bowed their treetop once more, this time into a gentle embrace. Happiness, a long forgotten feeling slowly returned. Over time the two trees grew entwined and grew to tremendous heights. Outliving the trees that grew around them, they saw the rise of a new forest. It is rumored that they are still there, looking out over the ocean they are resting together. A new pairing.
